@Jonathan A.  I’m not a lawyer but I would doubt that they would have a case against you if you had a signed contract prior to beginning work  and you had fulfilled all of your requirements in the contract.  

As a contractor myself I understand the frustration of people questioning costs after the project is completed.   You said you did a project at “cost“ and made no profit, is your mark-up included in that “cost”?   Is that what they are questioning?  We’re you up front with them on how much your mark up would be before signing the contract?

If you felt comfortable with your pricing going into the deal and you hit your numbers right on you should have no problem being transparent with them regarding the cost of the materials and labor.  

 Most importantly you don’t want to screw anyone over especially if these investors are friends, relatives or even acquaintances.  You may be able to hide something now and make a couple thousand dollars but you are making things more difficult for your future self. Open your books and let them see how much things cost.  They don’t necessarily have a “right” to see them but it seems as “partners” it’s the right thing to do.
