Post: Great meetings in Fayetteville, NC this week

My partner and I invest in the Fayetteville, NC area, but we both live in CA.  I was in town for business and to visit family, so I reached out to a few BP locals to see if we could meet up and introduce ourselves.

First off, I met with @Jerome Bell, Sr., who was very generous with his time.  We hit it off right away, probably because of our bald heads and love for travel.

Then, I met with @Stephen Tupper for a brief introduction.  The meeting was short and sweet, but I feel we can do some business together in the future.

Last, I met with @Alexander Felice at Happy Hour.  We both work for banks as our day job, so we had plenty of client stories to share.  We shared a common vision and strategy for what we want our real estate businesses to look like down the road.

The point of this post is to do a little research on BP to see who's in the town that you're traveling to.  You may or may not find some opportunities to do business, but you'll certainly meet some great people who you can bounce ideas off of in the future.

Hi Lauren, our attorney Jeff Radford (910-485-7782 ask for Fallon) is a great guy.  Maybe he can help you.  Tell him that I referred you.

Good luck! Lee

Following.... I'm in the same boat. Living in CA, but investing in NC. I'm considering converting to an S-Corp rather than an LLC to minimize this tax and reporting burden.

Hi Stephen, my partner and are actively investing in the Fayetteville area. We have 3 rehabs underway currently - 2 for flips and 1 for rental. This will be our 5th rental property, with the goal to buy another couple SFR rentals before the end of the year.

Great to meet you!

Welcome to Bigger Pockets @Phillip Boyd.  I bought my first two properties in Fayetteville in 2006 and have purchased many more starting last year.  It is a good market, with plenty of opportunity with the military bases nearby.  It would be great to connect and talk sometime.

Thanks for the reply @Brandon Hall.  You make some excellent points.  I'm definitely adding these to my list.

Thanks @Ryan Hall.  I'm a little too "old school" where I expect people are telling the truth and have good intentions.  Unfortunately, I got burned a bit.  Bad thing for the next contractors we deal with is that we now have a bunch more paperwork to sign to ensure there are no misunderstandings.

@Max T., I agree.  Nobody ever wants to get the courts involved.  My tickets are booked to NC, and I'll be in court 3 weeks from tomorrow.  <<fingers crossed>>  Just have to do some prep to make my argument rock-solid and easy to understand from the magistrate's point of view.

Thanks @Brent Paul, that certainly makes sense.  Having a CPA that invests personally would certainly ensure he better understands the strategies we have in place.

Hi @Dawn Brenengen, I'll message you the rehab address.  Thanks for reaching out!  I'll have an update in a month after the court date.

Here's an update to our situation... the home sold in January 2015 and we made a small profit, even after the contractor overbid.

We have tried several times to settle with the contractor, but he has barely responded, if at all.  His last response was that "he prayed on it and decided not to accept our offer to setttle."

So, I filed a small claims action against him on Monday, and our court date is in 5 weeks.  In NC, the maximum small claims amount is $10,000, which will just about cover everything.

I'm pouring over old emails, pulling supporting documents, and creating a timeline to show the judge (magistrate) to prove our case.  Wish me luck!
