Post: Beacon NY looks like a hot market

HI Alex - The lower Hudson Valley is definitely a burgeoning area. The only negative I can think of as far as Beacon goes is that the schools are not yet considered desirable. At least according to anecdotal evidence. I have a colleague who is a VP with young children and he looked at Beacon, but opted to move to another town in the area. I can't recall off-hand which.

It's definitely a hot area, but young, affluent families are also looking for good schools. There may be some private schools in the area that make up for the lack of good public schools or the schools may improve with the influx of tax revenue. Like I said, my comment is based on one data point. But it is something to consider.

@Darren Sager  Thank you for the invitation. Since my office is in NoMad about a block from the event, I will definitely make it a point to stop in.

Some people just like to find ways to feel "better" than others. Look at the popularity of Hoarders or The Jerry Springer Show.

Calling terms used by others "low class" probably makes him feel superior.

We (two people and two miniature dachshunds) have been living in a 350 square foot apartment for ten years. Need I say more? :D

But in addition to that, we've been enchanted by the Maine/NH seacoast for a while now. I grew up in the Boston area and have been going up to Maine and NH my whole life. I always preferred it to MA. Even though a lot of my family lives in MA, we like the small town/city feel of Portland and the fact that it's got an artsy vibe. I'm an art director by trade and feel I can probably get a gig there. My partner is a yoga teacher and health and nutrition coach and we like that the area is outdoorsy as well.

We've been thinking about moving for a few years now and when we visited a friend in East Parsonsfield this summer at her lake house, we decided to take the plunge.

Hi @Sara McGrath! Welcome to BP. I'm a newbie myself and currently researching the possibility of moving to Portland from Manhattan with my partner and investing similarly. You're going to find a lot of helpful information here.

I don't know how much you've read during your lurk, but I've learned a lot from The Ultimate Beginners Guide and these Podcasts:

Podcast 25: Four newbies and their real estate success stories

Podcast 11: The Ultimate Beginner's Podcast For Real Estate Investors

And as Joshua says, set up the alerts. That's how I heard about your introduction.

Lots of luck and I hope to keep in touch!

Hello @Mike Hurney A big part of where I end up doing the bulk of investing will be wherever I can land a full-time job in New England. I like the idea of the Maine/NH seacoast area, but the jobs for art directors are a little scarce up there. So, who knows? I may just end up right back where I started from—which is not so far from West Roxbury.

In the meantime, I'm not averse to doing deals in areas where I won't necessarily live (but know people) because I can hire someone to take care of maintenance if the numbers make sense. Which is what I'm learning the ins and outs of now.

Are you investing southwest of the city?

Thanks for the welcome, Ned.

I actually found your blog post while searching and it's one of the reasons I am here offering my skills for trade!

Since I did find it helpful, I'll go bump that puppy up top now.

Kevin

Hey BP -

I'm a marketing design director with over 15 years of experience in print, web, direct mail, trade shows, B2B advertising, POP, etc. I've worked for Barnes and Noble, Hearst, NBC/Universal, USA Networks, and Random House and have freelanced for many other bold-faced companies.

I'd love to trade my skills, experience, contacts, creativity, and eagerness for a chance to mentor/partner with an experienced S/MFH investor.

Though I eventually plan to move out of the area (not for at least a year), I will always have connections here and many friends. I won't be moving too far away, anyway, since the idea is to be closer to my family in Boston. So I can begin to invest here in the NYC/CT area (my brother and his family live in Fairfield) and it still feels doable for the future.

This would have to be part time for now as I'm presently employed full time. My plan is to some day get out from behind the desk and create my own schedule. Of course, I don't expect that right away.

Any local, experienced people out there who have something to share and could use a hand with their marketing/design/business should send me a message outlining what they need/expect from the relationship and we can take it from there.

All the best ~ Kevin
