@Joseph Bafia What city is your STR in? I was actually targeting those areas because I like to ski so I wanted to be relatively close to a mountain.

@Kyle H. That's great to hear that Bryson City gets such great occupancy and rates. I would say after the research we have done, BC probably our top contender. Thanks for your input!

Thank you @Melissa Wesling!

@Joseph Bafia We have considered towns near Asheville as well, and Mars Hill was one that we were looking at--especially since it is closer to a Ski Mtn (avid skiier here). How well do your rentals in Mars Hill perform? Do you see much traffic for people who are wanting to visit Asheville or just stay in the mountains?

@Julie McCoy We will definitely be looking at property taxes for each area, but I did not know that TN was was lower and had no income tax--that is certainly a benefit! Thanks for your info!

@Aaron Smith Thank you for the info. Ideally, we would like a cabin in the mountains where we can enjoy cooler weather during the summer months. If you don't mind me asking, how does your property do on AirBnB in the remaining months you are not there?

@Collin Hays Thanks for your input! Thank goodness my husband is an Excel wizard so we shouldn't have any trouble crunching numbers!

We were planning on self managing, but we haven't yet looked to see if that was common in the areas we are looking at. Thanks for the info!

Thanks for your input @Ken Boone! We'll definitely look into that area.

@Ken Boone This is primarily for investment purposes. However, we will certainly use it if/when it is not rented. Pigeon Forge would be about 5.5 hrs from us which isn't terrible, but we'd prefer something closer. We'll have to crunch some numbers to see if the benefits of a property in Pigeon Forge outweigh the cost.

HI BP,

My husband and I are seriously looking into purchasing a STR and vacation home in the North Carolina mountain area. We currently live about 4.5-5.5 hours away depending on where we purchase the property, so we would manage the STR remotely. We are considering the Blowing Rock/Boone area, Cashiers, or Bryson City area. Has anyone had success in STR in any of these regions? Are there any other areas that we could be missing out on?

Thanks for the input!

Hello Glenn,

I know this thread is quite old but I wanted to reach out to see if you ended up purchasing property near the Blowing Rock area? I am looking to purchase a vacation home/short term rental property in the NC mountain area and that is one of the towns I am looking at. Have you had success there?
