That was actually our plan, to become an LLC, once we've starting dong enough deals or holding properties, that the business can support itself. You also have an excellent point on the Sec. of State question. One phone call can save us a lot of headaches and hassles later. If we're not required to register with them, then that's fine. But, if we are, I'll already be on the phone with their office. Thanks @Zachary Tunstall.

OK, so I have a question about some of the requirements is making sure that I'm doing everything legally. My niece and I just formed a partnership together for the purpose of investing in real estate. Our plans are to begin with wholesaling and/or fix and flips and eventually begin to buy and hold in the companies name. At this point, we are simply structured as a General Partnership. I have already filed for an EIN with the IRS and we have our DBA from the county. What I'm not sure about is whether or not we are required to file with the Texas Secretary of State. I have been researching this and I'm "pretty sure" that we aren't required to unless we were a Limited Liability Partnership (which we are not), but I was just hoping that someone might be able to verify this for me and help ease my mind. I just want to make sure that we are completely legal and legitimate.

I wanted to thank everyone for their responses, so far.  The encouragement is extremely helpful.  I also want to thank @Matt G. for the recommedation on the Brazos Real Estate Investors Club.  I actually found them online yesterday and signed up.  I have already RSVP'd to (and plan to attend) next week's meeting. I am looking forward to that and to meeting new people and connections.

Hello everybody, my name is James Stevens and I'm a new member of Bigger Pockets. I'm also a new real estate investor in the Bryan/College Station, TX area. I am 37 years old and have been working in the construction industry for about 20 years. Over that time, I have worked for a few different people that flipped houses. They would purchase a house and my crew and I would do all the needed repairs to that property. It was at this time that I realized I was on the wrong side of the business and began researching and learning about real estate and different investment strategies. I am fairly new to the B/CS area as well as still a rookie in the REI world so I look forward to any and all help and advice that I can receive from anyone. I am motivated and determined to do whatever is necessary in order to pursue this path of investing and improve my quality of life as well as other people's. My wife's niece had recently expressed an interest in this also, so I've been sharing all the books, websites and advice I've acquired so far with her and helping to educate her on some of the basics and techniques. She and I have partnered up and are looking to begin our investing careers immediately.
