I'm sorry to hear you have to leave the military medically. I have had several friends along the journey be forces to exit due to combat or training-related injuries. I think you are doing everything right! You have set a target goal day, started to build a team, and have developed the strategy you want to drill down into and become an expert. Are you focusing on your local market, or are you open the OOS?

That's awesome that you can project out 20 years. I set my timeline to match my military retirement and will adjust based on either achieving them or time-based. Your comment reminded me of an acronym used heavily in engineering, and I've heard on BiggerPockets several times too. 

Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, Timely (SMART)

Love it! I stumbled into REI when we purchased our first property with a VA loan in 2016, not knowing that it would change my life for the better. Luckily, we got a property and built a great team not understanding the fundamentals. Deliberately planning to start REI, as you stated, is a much better way!
