Post: Tax deduction for looking for investments?

Hi everyone, happy new year. Fiancé and I are heading up to Vermont for 2 nights to look at some potential investment property. Not sure if we would treat it as a "rental" or a "vacation home" or "business", but we wouldn't be there more than 14 days a year, that's for sure! Maybe 6-8 days a year, maybe!! And they would most likely be maintenance days. Anyway, would our travel expenses for this trip be deductible as long as we save receipts and keep a record of properties we looked at and realtors we met with? I'm only thinking fuel, tolls, lodging and meals. Would they only be deductible if we purchased property in Vermont? Reason I ask that is because we are also planning a couple other weekends in a few other areas. Haven't decided if we will do a golf, ski, beach, or NYC city, etc rental/vacation home yet. Appreciate any help or insight, thanks!!

Hi everyone, this is my first post after trolling around a few days. Been listening to the podcasts and watching the YouTube videos for weeks. Read every business book, investing, personal finance and real Estate book in multiple library systems (about 60+ books deep). Literally every rich dad in the series. (I have a long commute and audiobooks are my BFF) Finally took the plunge after all that education-without-action, when my fiancés cousin and brother came across a wholesale deal an hour from me. We partnered up, 50/25/25. Took much longer than expected but it was our first and the commute to/from the project was a never again lesson learned. Priority for myself is that my next I want to be very local. Bottom line is that I LOVED the entire experience and started looking for my next project. I started developing a wix RE website, setup an LLC, got business cards, distributed about 50 bandit signs near me after setting up a google voice number, but haven't received any calls yet. Planning to put more signs out tomorrow. Using a realtor to find an investment property seems counterintuitive because why wouldn't they keep the killer deals for themselves and pass the mediocre deals onto their best friends who have been making them money for years?!? I suppose there's the possibility that you can only work on so much at once and the leads may outweigh what you can handle. Any bird wholesalers in south eastern NJ and along the NJ coast please add me to your buyers list. Thanks y'all Joe

Likewise! Any wholesalers please add me to your buyers list. Message me for contact information. Rich and Abe, what territories do you guys focus on? I've got some marketing out there and would love to share any opportunities in case I come across some near you that are too far west for me to work. May I add your info to my buyers list that I'm trying to build up?

Hi Anthony, Have you had any luck since your post a few months back? I'm in egg harbor twp, can't say that I'm qualified to be a mentor but maybe we can chat, I've just finished my first rehab and am also looking in our area. Message me, would love to chat and bounce off ideas! Joe
