@Paul Moore Thanks for offering to introduce me to your real estate CPA. I will send you a private message.

@Brock Mogensen Good point! I just reached out to an English-speaking CPA in Japan.

@Bruce Lynn, I like the idea of the SDIRA. You're right about not being able to enjoy the accelerated depreciation, though. Since I am in Japan for the long haul, my main source of income comes from my job here and I cannot claim any depreciation on my taxes in Japan regardless of whether I invest in a syndication as an individual, through an LLC, or via the SDIRA route like you mentioned. I just want to enjoy the higher potential returns of investing in syndications (and diversification) without having to pay taxes as I roll over distributions to new offerings every three to five years. I did, however, contact a syndication attorney so I will report back on what he or she says after our Zoom call. In the meantime, thanks a lot for the input and enjoy your weekend!

@David Lilley That's very good to know seeing as how a lot of the syndications I'm looking at are located in Texas. Thanks a lot for the heads-up!

@Ryan Garrison if I lived in the States, you're right, I wouldn't have to invest in syndications through an LLC (syndications usually form an LLC to begin with). However, since I live in Japan and pay taxes here, I also have to tell the Japanese government how much money I make from overseas investments. Unfortunately, syndications are taxed at one of the highest rates (roughly 30%) in Japan.

I am living overseas (in Japan) and I would like to invest as an LP in multifamily syndications using an LLC in the US in order to avoid paying taxes to the Japanese government on distributions from said syndications. Does anyone know what steps I should take in order to do this? Thanks in advance!

@Dan Burstain Thanks for the insight. I'll definitely run the BP calculators on properties in Austin as well...I was only looking at DFW area before.

@Trent Honea You're right. If you can get a deal that cash flows, go for it (no matter the location)! My main concern is that the property taxes would continue to rise while the rent would remain roughly the same. Although I'm sure that the demand for housing is increasing in Texas (especially in the DFW and Austin areas), I would not want to invest in a property betting on appreciation.
