@ Russell Brazil, Can you share your thoughts on newer built homes vs old homes from the point of investment like resale and appreciation?

In my humble opinion, a home isn't just a family gathering space, but a financial investment. And with an older home, you can see on paper just how much the property has appreciated over the years.

As for a new home? With no history to look back on, this purchase can be considered more of a gamble. The price could shoot up, or it could plummet due to the abundance of new home supply.

i think clarksburg (newer homes)  would be a good option, but look at which schools the house is districted for. the elem and middle schools are fantastic. there are 3 different hs for clarksburg residents (clarksburg, damascus and seneca valley hs). the commute would be decent as well.   urbana is nice with good schools, but the commute to and from gaithersburg can be a nightmare in rush hour traffic.

@Sarah Pak, Thanks for sharing your opinion. I don't think in my budget I can find a SFH in Clarksburg but I will definitely explore further this option. BTW which HS will you vouch?

Hi all,

I have been exploring this forum after somebody recommended me and I must say that you people are super helpful and knowledgeable.

We, a family of 4, are relocating to Maryland and currently looking into house buying options but we are not sure where to look. I was reading posts where members have mentioned specific areas but it would be great if I can ask a more personal opinion on what may work best for us.

Our main objective is to buy a SFH and hold it for at least 10 years. Property appreciation will be a plus. Our budget is 550K. Our workplace is located in Gaithersburg.

We are looking for a safe neighborhood with good middle and senior high school and preferably within 30 min commute from Gaithersburg. It would be greatly appreciated if anyone pointed out what areas may work best for us.

Id shoot for Rockville or Urbana with your budget and needs.

@Russell BrazilI,  I started following you and catching up on your previous posts. I found your posts very informative and like your precise and pragmatic approach to the real estate investment landscape. I will explore Urbana and Rockville but I don’t know why I have this assumption that Rockville is out of my price range.

$550K? For a single family? Unless it is an older home, it's harder to find these days. I am being biased here as I personally like colonials, that are mostly built from the 1990s. Frederick County along I-70 (New Market, etc) may be your best option at that price range for newer built homes and highly rated schools. If you are willing to settle for larger THs, many the size of single family homes, look into Urbana, MD, also part of Frederick County or Clarksburg, MD which are closer to Gaithersburg.

@Richard Mollel, I will definitely look into Frederick County along the I-70 area. We are not into TH scene. Thanks for your input.
