@Matt K. I listed my car on Turo as an experiment and whilst I had some book requests, I just couldn't get over the possibility of them getting into an accident in SF city....

@Dustin Ruff

In my case I had family assistance. I think my summary in another thread would answer your question. :)

Hi Charlie,

I think my summary in another thread would answer your question #1. ;)

Ok here's to summarize the anecdotes on this thread.

In order to own a million dollar house in the bay area, one has to do one of the following:

  • Buy when it was cheaper. Either many years ago or during a downturn.
  • Buy something cheaper and slowly trade up.
  • Inherit from family.
  • Get some sort of family assistance. Gift, loan or investment.
  • Get a high paying job or run a successful business.
  • Get a windfall. Lottery, stock option IPO, sale of a business or inheritance monies.
  • Do something creative like house hacking, partnerships, etc.

Did I miss anything?

In each case, there's always a breakthrough involved.

Asking "how can I afford" is a good first step towards a breakthrough. :)

I'm a landlord and an AirBnB host.

My long term tenant pays on time doesn't break any rules but doesn't keep the place in tip top condition. I know because I have to go in to fix things...

My short term rental has great reviews and always kept in tip top condition. The only damage from the turnarounds were to my high quality towels...

I wouldn't mind JV-ing with a hardworking tenant so my place is kept in great condition, I'll have no headaches and I get better yield. That's a win-win-win.

@Ariel Goldenberg What I did for my bathroom leak and other needs was to use Thumbtack to get 3 different contractors to come and give a free quote. Usually by the 2nd I'll have a good idea of the problem and right solution. In my case it was an incorrect roofing for low slopes that hadn't been stressed tested like this season.

I'm a millennial at heart and would have moved to Sacramento from the Bay Area if my company had better work-from-home policies. Outside of SF and Oakland, the next hub for arts and culture would be Sacramento. Even San Jose can't compare with all the surrounding tech monoculture. Sacramento's affordable housing means I can watch more shows, visit more restaurants and make more road trips!

@David Zhu I've been to Johnson H's meetup in Milpitas a couple of times. Great way to meet folks from mid peninsula-south bay. There's a meetup this Friday.
