@Marco Santarelli

@Marco Santarelli thanks so much for the feedback and sorry for my late reply.

I see that working with a good team is going to be essential in BRRRR for a foreign investor. At this point I'm just trying to understand my options, and hearing this makes me wonder if BRRRR is a good option for a newbie like me.

Regarding my citizenship, yes, that’s definitely going to be a big issue. I’m British. Eek.

Hi all!

As the topic title suggests, I'm a prospective foreign investor, meaning I don't own any properties yet, but I'm eager to change that! I'm a UK citizen, but live in Japan, so either way it will be long distance REI.

I don't want this to be a turnkey vs BRRRR thread, but I have questions about the pros and cons of both... thanks in advance.

— Turnkey —

I have a decent (for me at least) amount of cash saved up, and looking at turnkey investment opportunities in Memphis (thanks to a recommendation from a friend). I will be able to afford a 40% down payment on a reasonably priced house (<100k). But it’s going to be difficult to do that once a year...

— Question —

Would it be wise to partner up with a US citizen from the get go?

That way I'd be paying loan tax and would need less of a down payment. I realise this means I'd have to use an LLC who would surely take a cut though...

BRRRR

I know less about how this would work as a foreign investor. I presume I’d be working with agents, renovators and the rest all whilst not being in the country myself. Seems like a lot of hassle, but perhaps more profitable? (Long Distance Real Estate Investing is on my read list!). I’ve been recommended a view areas, one being Alabama.

— Questions —

Has anyone done BRRRR whilst not being in the country? How did it go? What kind of companies exist for helping with this?

Thanks for the reply Kiley!

I picked up the book "Set For Life" the other day to read about house hacking and reading it, I realise that I have made a mistake in buying my first home out here. 🤦♂️ I bought a "reasonable" family home, that is, I live in this home and pay a mortgage on it, but clearly, this place is not generating income. Wish I had gone the house hacking route now... Still, as you said: better late than never! I have some cash saved up and am ready to start purchasing property. I just have to choose my market now.

Looking forward to hearing about investment opportunities and learning about how I can go from James York level to Daniel Mills level in as little time as possible!

Great to hear that @Daniel Mills is thought of so highly. I'm learning from him and am pretty sure I'm going to become a nuisance over the next few months as I start to form questions and plan my investment future.

@David Gotsill, great to connect with you. Looking forward to learning more on here and possibly at Tokyo BP meetups. Do you think they are a good place to get started?

Hi all.

I am new to the site and the whole concept of real-estate investment. A true newbie. I’d like to take this opportunity to introduce myself.

I’m a British citizen in my mid 30s and have lived in Japan for the last 14 years. I own one single family house out here (which I live in with my wife and kids) and have no other properties. I was introduced to the site by fellow Japan resident @Daniel Mills and I’m looking to start my journey in real estate, make connections with others, and find useful information to help me take the plunge!

I’m interested in:

- Japan property and land

- UK property (as I guess that’s the best place for a good deal on loans for me as a citizen??)

- US property (thanks to Dan’s words of advice)

Keen to connect with you all, grow my education on this topic and start investing!

Thanks,

James
