Post: Seeking House Hacking Advise

@Justin Laughlin

I am still currently house hacking a house in Grapevine, Texas and I have had no regrets. I started looking in 2020 and it took me around 7 months to find a decent fit for me. I did a FHA loan and while that was good for me at the time I wish I would of done a conventional mortgage as PMI won't go away unless you refinance out of your FHA loan. Sounds like you can afford the extra percentage to do that.

Hello All, I am currently house hacking and have been living in one half of my duplex for 13 months. I got a letter in the mail today from my mortgage company saying that I've had an escrow shortfall in my account. Basically, my escrow wasn't calculated correctly or it was taxed differently when I bought the property leading to the shortfall. Now my escrow is way behind and it does not have the min. amount required by the mortgage company. I can pay 4K and my mortgage will go up $300 or I can just pay to catch up and that will cause my mortgage to go up by $624. Ouch. I have some equity in the property and have saved up some cash. Should I sell the property and roll it into a better property that cash flows better?

I am currently house hacking a property and just renewed a lease with my tenants. I have discovered that they just got a new puppy and the language in my lease states that no pets are allowed. What would you do in this situation? Haven't had any other issues then this.

@Daniel Lynch

Bought my first househack in January and currently my girlfriend and I are splitting the expenses. We signed a lease, because she was concerned if we broke up she would have time to find another place. Tough situation through we just talked it through.

@David Simard

Depends on how long you think you’re going to have the property for. You’re really only saving a few hundred dollars With used appliances and if oneOf the appliances goes out you’re basically eating your savings there. Those are my thoughts I bought new appliances on sale for my current house-hack.
