There are quite a few smaller firms that are great with investors. I just hung my license with EZ-Vest Realty and I am military as well. The couple that owns the company built it to be investor friendly and they are investors themselves. They also have a great property management side which was a factor for me since I want to buy and hold too. Good luck on your search. Take tons of interviews and remember to sleep on your decision. Don't rush into a firm that promises you free rainbows.

Alex Bok I would love to start a conversation with you as I am the total opposite. I am new to investing and just got my RE license in VA, but in 2 years I am moving to Chicago so I want to start investing up there as well as VA. I am all ears when it comes to Chicago and learning the ropes of city life. It's a little different then the country/military life I have known.

Blake, I would love to meet and chat over some coffee to hear your ideas. I am military stationed in Newport News as well. I just got my RE License and am currently trying to invest myself. I used my VA Loan to years ago and I am house hacking right now with a few friends in hopes to afford my next property very soon. I will be looking for a few rental properties before I move to Chicago in 2 years. Although my first property was a single family I will be looking into buying multi-families to acquire more cash flow for when I do leave. From all the stories I have heard it seems better to hire a management company to deal with the boots on the ground problems from such a long distance and your contract with them will lay out how every item is handled. I wish you well in your purchase whichever you go for.

Welcome Norman, I too am military (Air Force) in the Hampton Roads area. Also, I am new to the investing. There are some great investor groups like PRIEA and TRIG on meetup that meet monthly. I just got my real estate license in hopes it will help me understand the Agent side and investor side of investing. I bought my first property with my VA loan and I am basically house hacking with 3 roommates to get myself started. The books in the book store provide a great wealth of knowledge and really show the different avenues people take. Plus the people on BiggerPockets have been very welcoming and helpful. I hope to see you at a local meetings. I can't offer much knowledge since I am new to investing, but I am always ready to find answers, partner up, learn, and help in any way possible. Long winded I know, but I am excited so welcome welcome!!!

Hey everyone. My name is Jacqlyn. I am currently in the Principles of Real Estate class to get my Salesperson License. Real Estate as a business is pretty new to me. I currently work full time active duty, but plan to transfer to ANG in three years. Right now I am currently in Virginia and would like to jump into the game now, that way when my family and I move to Chicago I have a bit of knowledge to get myself started in the big city. As a hobby I like to build and flip furniture, but always wanted to learn more carpentry skills to flip homes. I hope that getting my license first will help me bring something to the table when it comes time to find a mentor. As a goal I want to focus on flipping and rehabbing, but am open to all aspects of learning. A personal goal of mine is to flip at least five properties before we move and/or have a few rental properties to start creating cash flow. The local REIA groups around me meet on the day I have my class so as soon as that is over I will be attending the monthly meetings trying to soak up every possible tip I can get my hands on. I look forward to becoming more active in the Bigger Pockets community and meeting like minded people.
