It really depends on your goals. I'm in a similar situation and plan on making that money work as hard as possible for me by buying rental properties out of state. I'm not pressed for the rental income but I do need a tax deduction. In CA, sadly, $60k doesn't go far even for a down payment....on a condo! But there's always TJ! I hear the deals there are pretty sweet! :). Good luck!

Thanks so much for the note @J.Martin! It's definitely been a long road, but I'm beyond ready to get back in! I owned a condo on Lake Merritt (Essex) 2004-2011. It was good while it lasted, but...it didn't last. Anyway, I'm in learning mode right now and although it's exciting, it's also a bit freaky, so the more I can be in this community and surround myself with awesomeness like y'all, the better. Where is this meetup in SF at the end of the month? I want to make sure I've got my keywords all set up to ensure I get notified. I'm definitely gonna make it. Thanks again and hope to connect with you at one of these meetups!

I am SO excited to get my learn on from the BP community and finally take serious action towards my dream of becoming a successful real estate investor! Real Estate has been a passion of mine for many many years. I did invest in a property in Oakland CA back in 2004 only to become a part of the foreclosure statistic in 2011. Now I'm ready to put that behind me and move forward with a clear strategy towards real estate wealth.

I grew up in Los Angeles and San Diego but currently live in San Francisco.

I have a great day job working for a luxury beverage alcohol company guiding strategy on how to get Americans to drink more Champagne. Things could be worse. I love what I do, but I'm looking to build some serious wealth so that I can fulfill my dreams of not only owning a flat in San Francisco and a home in Napa, but also giving back to the community in too many ways to name.

My goal in the short term is to learn, network, obtain mentorships, and ultimately build a clear strategy to activate in 2015. I would love to connect with folks locally in the Bay Area! I can provide the Bubbles. :)

Hi Kimberly,

I totally related to your post as I too have been thinking, dreaming, and NOT DOING the real estate thing for well over 10 years because I either felt like I wasn't "in the know" enough, didn't have enough money, or that I would fail miserably. Well I did foreclose on a property after the market totally crashed back in 2008, and it took me a while to get back up. What I realized over the holiday break last month was that time is flying by, and the disappointment and failure that I would feel by NOT jumping in and taking action towards this dream would far exceed the pain of actually doing it. And PLUS, I'm pretty successful in other parts of my life, so why not here? Anyway, cheers to you for taking the first step and look forward to hearing about and being inspired by your progress!
