Jeff,
I do not have my GC, as most of my experience in construction is not recognized by the CSLB.
I have been climbing ladders and building things since I could crawl, as my father's passion is carpentry. For the past 10 years, while I was in school (meaning I worked mostly in the summers), he and I have co-designed and built a lakefront house in Malta, NY on Saratoga lake. I graduated with two masters degrees last year in May (MFA Fine Arts, MA Visual and Critical Studies) and was working occasionally as a gallery preparator while school was in session. The artwork I make is large-scale and often involves construction techniques used in home-building.
After graduating, I got married, and took a job as a full-time carpenter. Differences with my immediate supervisor led to us parting ways, and I continue to work 20-30 hours weekly with the co-owner of the company, building his personal home.
My optimal work environment is a situation where I am in charge from start to finish, and not working through someone else's process. I am a diligent researcher and planner, and like to have my head fully immersed in a project. This is impossible when you are working at someone else's direction and on someone elses design, and I don't feel like I am maximizing my potential on a day-to-day basis. (the following information is actually in my profile)
