Hi Bryan, thanks for the message and welcome! I'm not that large multifamily and what the call 1 room (basically a studio apartment that is much smaller than U.S size) is the way to go as it is definitely a renting society.  The question for me is going to be if Tokyo is the best place to start as I have heard the returns here are good enough to justify the huge price tag.  As you may have heard in the past and from my basic understanding, the buildings here in (houses included) depreciate in value opposed to the buy and holds in the U.S.  So it seems the best way to get into the game here is to jump into the medium/large apartment complexes.  I would like to eventually have a few buildings here in Japan, but really interested in starting to invest in the U.S from Japan.

Hello Brett! Thanks for the reply.  That is a fantastic idea.  I have actually been reading more and more about REITs as I just finished one of Grant Cardone's book talking about it.  Have you had any experience in investing in REITs?

I'd be happy to connect and catch up for coffee or a beer and talk real estate. There is also a monthly BP meet-up (3rd Thursday of the month), which you can find if you search the forums.  Although the content will vary greatly based on who attends any particular month, I like the meet-up as it's a chance to share ideas and experiences. But opinions differ, and I know some BPers find the Tokyo meet-ups less than useful.

To-date I've only invested in deals here in Japan, but like you I'm looking to start in the US as well.

Good luck!

Hello David, thanks for the welcome and for the information.  I am definitely interested in investing here in Japan as well.  I live in Shirokane/Hiroo area, so happy to catch up for a beer or coffee anytime if you are in the area (I think I saw a post of yours saying you work in Roppongi).  Looking forward to meeting you soon.

Cheers,

Harry

Hi All,  New to BPs and wanting some advice on investing from abroad.  I know this has probably been discussed in the past but wanted to see if anyone has some insights ( I remember hearing one of the podcasts I believe it was James Vermillion on episode #23). James had a partner he was working with and was most likely being paid in USD so it is a bit different than my situation.

I currently live and work full time in Tokyo Japan for a recruitment consulting firm and have only recently started researching about real estate investment.  My overall goal is to start building of rental properties in order to generate passive income while I continue to live and work full time here in Japan.  Obviously, it is less than ideal as I will not be able to physically look at every property I am interested in, and not to mention the challenge of trying to get financing while living/working abroad.

Has anyone had any experience with this or any clue where to begin?  Again, I am at the very start of all of this so ANY advice/tips will be really helpful.

Looking forward to hearing from the community!

Hello all,  Harry from Tokyo here and as I have just recently started listening to the BP podcasts (love them btw), I decided I should reach out and introduce myself.  I'm a 31-year-old American guy living and working in Tokyo as a Consultant/Headhunter for the automotive industry.  My parents and some of my family own 1 or 2 rental properties, and it is something I have always wanted to get into. I haven't done any deals to date but really looking forward to being part of this awesome community so thanks in advance for the advice and tips!
