Thanks for all the suggestions everyone! I will start the leg work on that right away. I'm very grateful for the advise! As far as my first property is concerned I was thinking of a duplex. Should I also shop for 3-4 unit properties? What might be the added benefit to more units other than cashflow. Are they about the same as far as upkeep or land lording in general?

Hello, My name is Jake. Im an aspiring investor in the Milwaukee and Madison Wisconsin area. I am currently living in a house I rent. I'm planning on taking on a roommate in the house to help save up money to begin investing. I am looking for advice about how to rent to a roommate and also what to watch out for. I have permission from the landlord to take on a roommate. Any suggestions would be very much appreciated. Thank you, Jacob Grant

My name is Jake. I'm a new member on Bigger Pockets and new to real estate investing overall. I'm currently a truck driver who hauls gasoline. I'm very interested in building a portfolio with buy and hold properties. My ultimate goal is to make double my current salary with cash flowing properties over the long term, and short term to be able to quit my job in the next 10 years. I am very grateful for any tips or advise someone is willing to give me. I have committed a significant amount of time to my goal already by spending time doing research and reaching out to other's in related fields. My plan is to house hack my first purchase by the summer of 2017 to get my feet wet. I am committing time everyday to find out the required information, and saving up the capital needed to get me started responsibly.

I am very excited to start this journey and to be a part of the Bigger Pockets community.

P.s. The podcast rocks! I listen to it while driving my tanker truck down the road.
