I own and manage a few vacation rentals in San Diego and we're about to launch in Joshua Tree. As Marshall said above, I definitely think you can do a lot to make the hassle of managing the vacation rental easier on you if you want to do it yourself. I highly recommend watching Robuilt on youtube. He's also a co-host of the bigger pockets podcast but he has a few videos on this topic exactly.
