Welcome Bryant,

Welcome and good luck on your adventure. My wife and I have been house hacking for almost 8 years, and we have loved it.

Hi Ian,

It is all in your head! You don't have a math problem, you have a fear problem. The good news is that you have the power to fix it.

Indulge me in a thought exercise:

Imagine several scenarios for yourself 20 years in the future: one in which you find a way to work, save, invest, and grow, and another scenario where you essentially do nothing for fear of failure. Which future looks brighter? You are choosing the latter scenario if you never take action to change your trajectory.

I printed out a quote that I have on a corkboard above my desk: "if you never try, you will never know" which I have gotten a lot of motivtion from.  If you try and fail, at least you can say to yourself that you tried and failed while daring for a great thing.

Good luck!

 Jay,

Interesting that you mention your Saudi clients.

I spent a short trip in the Middle East studying Islamic Finance a few years ago. It was very interesting, as their religious teachings were very clear about specifics like borrowing, charging interest, etc.

Modern Islamic Finance essentially provides a large number of "work arounds" that still comply with the religious law. For example, we in the US might buy a car on terms, and have a car payment of $500 per month that includes interest. In Kuwait, you might go to an Islamic bank, THEY buy the car and lease it to you, charge you no interest but your principal payments plus a service charge magically comes to $500 per month. Once you pay off the loan, the car is yours.

Interesting stuff,

Evan
