Condo fees are extremely high in the NYC area and I rather pay taxes than condo fees to be honest. Thats the main reason.

Thanks James. I may have to find a co-signer then in order to get a house in the NY metro area.

I've seen listings on Trulia, Zillow and Realtor.com. I've inquired on many listings and each time the property has been sold and in one case the price had almost tripled. I went to see about one and was then shown a house not in my budget. I know my price range is on the low side but I've seen listings in my price range.

I understand that everyone has to make a living. There are working class areas that have homes for that price range and that I would be ok living in. I can stay there for a few years and then move on to better. I am going to keep trying to find a place, it's challenging but I believe it can be done.

I've seem some listings for 2 families in that price range and single families also in the south section of Queens and parts of the Bronx so they do exist. I don't want to rent, NYC are rents are so high ($1200 to $1600 easily). I can't see spending that kind of money and not having anything after years of renting. I am looking to invest in a property so that I can have a nest egg for my retirement. I need to be smart about this, I can't afford to rent really when I think about it.

Thank you Brian. I believe there is someone out there and will keep trying. Not only am I trying to get me foot in the door but I'm also trying to get back on my feet due to a fire 6 months ago where I was displaced. The good thing about losing my low rent apartment in the upper manhattan section of NYC was being determined to buy a property and get started on RE inventing. I am currently staying with family until I get a place. I can't impose much longer as they feel I should buy a condo, they feel that getting a studio or a 1 bedroom in a nice area is perfect for me. Clearly they don't understand that I must use the opportunity to get into owning a house. They do not understand and I can't impose much longer. I can compromise somethings, like location and distance but not the opportunity to buy a house. I am determined despite the obstacles.

I am looking in Queens, Brooklyn and the Bronx. I would like a 2 family or will be ok with a single family (3/2 with a basement).

Hi there,

I am a novice and I am trying to get into the RE Business and become an owner occupant and landlord at the same time. I am having a hard time finding anyone to help me find a house and I don't understand why. Every house I have inquired about is sold or the agents want to show me something that is 3 times more than the property I've inquired about or went to see. In one case I was asked to get a co-signer in order to purchase a place that was 3 times more than the house I went to see about. There are many listings with this particular RE agency that I can afford but they are not interested in selling those homes to me. In some cases they turn me away instantly or want to show me co-ops or condos. My budget is $150K and I've been pre qualified for said amount by Wells Fargo, I have 5% to put down. I realize that finding a house for that amount in the NYC area is a challenge but I know its possible. I'll settle for a single family with a basement before I buying a co-op or a condo.

Any advice or anyone that is in a position to help me find a house so I can get my foot in the door in the real estate business.

Remaining hopeful!!

Sofia
