I'm just starting out in the real estate world. I'm looking into multifamily units and am reading a lot of books and other materials. This thread was phenomenal! It had a lot of information but it didn't seem overwhelming, just very informative.

Once I saw "REIA" used in a few threads I wanted to learn more about it. The website is helpful; however, I wanted people's opinions who are a part of this group. What are the meeting for? Who attends/joins? What are the fees associated with the group? What are the translatable benefits of being a member of REIA. Any help would be awesome.

I will look into getting a triplex in the area. Hopefully, there are more in/close to our price range because what you're saying about the more units you have the better you make out if there's is one occupancy with only two units in comparison to three or four units. That was something I hadn't thought of before.

Thank you Joe and Joel. Going in and seeing court proceedings isn't something I'd thought about before. I also didn't know every state had a landlord/tenant handbook. I'll definitely look into that. The reason we were considering a 2 unit is because that's what's more available in our area that is in a price range we're comfortable with. I've already lined up tenants (my mother who needs a place for 6-8 years). A lot of people are nervous renting to friends/family but I believe it's a risk I'm willing to take to start my journey as a homeowner and landlord. I will look into that podcast though.

Hi,

I'm new to this website (and to real estate). I've been doing research on real estate for a few months and my partner and I are interested in buying our first property. We want to use our first purchase (and one time using an FHA loan) to buy a multi-family unit. This will be our first experience buying as well as being landlords. I'm very interested in hearing anyone's opinion on buying multi-family unit(s), being a landlord, or just words of wisdom in real estate. I like to have as much information as possible. Thanks for any help you can provide.
