It can come down to what you want/need.
There are many fairly good systems.
This is a general response, naming attributes, based on your post and what I would want personally:
-Monitored, police response
-motion sensors in appropriate areas
-cameras both indoor (public areas) & outdoors - motion activated, records to cloud, holds for minimum 48 hours, w/ audio capability
-remote light switch control
-remote alarm mode settings : on, off, at home
-remote lock / unlock entrance
-remote doorbell camera (service, delivery interaction)
-temperature & flood sensors around appropiate areas
-alert capability (various) set for your concerns
-ample exterior motion dection led lighting, some solar powered lights that illuminate all night
-phone app that you are comfortable using
There are more attributes I would want but I'll stop here.
Some of the above fall under home automation and it is directly related to security.
There are a good number of systems that achieve the above.
In my humble opinion, technology should be a landlord's/propery manager's best friend. The abilities, including view inside & outside, along with other information provided can keep a property much more secure and give the human counterpart peace of mind.
I'm in Chicago too. If you have any questions feel free to contact me.

The court smiled on me - once I finish electric & hvac, I'm good to go. Have electric work in progress & lined up hvac. Things are looking better :)

I"ve learned quite a bit about Chicago and the building department, court perspectives, many types of contractors, and more. When I am done renovating my current project I will be looking for the next one.
Looking to connect with those having similar interests. If I can help others I am happy to make friends and win-win relationships.

I received a stop work order and hired an architect to draw up plans and handle the permit process. He turned out to be very unreliable. Has anyone had any experience here? I don't know who to trust anymore.
