@Bruce Runn @Tim Swierczek Thank you both for the information. Bruce the basement does have the 8' headroom and has 2 egrass windows. My thought was to move the mechinacals to one side of the basement and convert the other side. I have about don't know any of the components such as fire and sound proofing ceiling assemblies, and the 1hr. fire rated door. There is also a common stairwell. I was hoping the GC would be able to tell all the things necessary to be up to code. So hopefully he will tell me about the fire and sound proofing ceiling and 1hr. fire door. So how do I go about contacting someone about the 2040comp plan? I wanted to see if I could get a head start on the conversation to see what I need to do before I start getting bids from contractors.

@Rebecca Sabot, thanks Rebecca I appreciate the information. So my question is do I contact the zoning and let them know my plans?

Hello All, I am closing on a duplex in N. Minneapolis and I would like to turn the basement into a 3 unit. This is my first oppurtunity to tackle such a task. Once I close on the multifamily I want to start the process. This is fully rented good cashflow. I heard that N. MN is welcoming the opportunity for these kind of builds, but I don't know what I need to get started. Any recommendations would be helpful. I am looking to spend around 25-30k on this addition is this a realistic number?
