I appreciate the welcome, guys.  I just arrived in KC this afternoon for a week or so, so I'll try to check out that Wednesday meeting.  @Matt Pritchard, do you have any details for that?  @Brett Snodgrass, I forgot about meetup.com.  I came across a good post about that here a week or two ago, so I should be able to find it again.  Great idea!

My most immediate need is to find someone that can help me plan a tax strategy. I've been pretty lazy about that in the past. Any recommendations for someone familiar with REI and state tax / city earnings tax issues?

Edit: I have the option of moving back to either side of state line, but KS would have other tax benefits for me.  So I'm actually starting with "Where should I live?"

I left Kansas City four years ago, but now I've decided to move back and invest in real estate, specifically buying and holding single family homes. My current thought is to buy and rehab homes with an ARV in the sub-$100k range, since it seems possible to hit 1.5 to 2.0% rental rates.

I have a great contractor on board, but there are still a lot of holes in my plan. I'd love to get some referrals for CPAs and attorneys, and am open to input on the pros and cons of operating in Kansas vs. Missouri.  I'm most familiar with Johnson County, Westport/midtown/downtown, and the Northland. The Northland seems to be an emerging opportunity, but I'm open to any part of the metro.

I'd love to meet some people with related interests, and would also appreciate any info on local groups.

Just FYI - unless you registered under a fake name, I don't think you actually withheld your name.
