Agree with @Dawn Anastasi. I actually found a number of semi-collectible items in various houses. I did not have time to market any of it online for money and since I always try to get the rehabs done as quickly as possible I just post ads on Craigslist saying "Please come take it. Free. If you don't want it I'll need to throw it away." This works. People will email you and come get it. A while back I made the mistake of actually keeping some semi-collectible items at my place thinking "Oh, I'll sell this stuff someday." Before I knew it I had accumulated a lot of boxes of junk. Ugh.

Hi @Jerry R. I bought the house via the courthouse back in 2010 and I had a fairly high margin of safety. These days if I buy a house with a pool, yes, I absolutely make sure to leave room for repairs. But hen again nowadays I make sure to ask my awesome pool buddy to look at the pool before I buy the house.

Excuse the long gap in responding. I decided today to go look back through some of my really old posts. I loved this house and wish I still owned it. I was short-sighted back then and flipped the house instead of putting a renter in and holding it long-term. Doh! :)

I had such a blast at this event. Loved every second of it and so glad I went. Met so many great people and made fun new friends.  Can't wait to go again next year!

Thank you Phillip. So pumped you brought this thread back to life. I have not heard of the artist you mentioned. But without any further ado, let me post another sweet playlist.

Thank you, guys. Very kind of you.

I am going to move it to a neutral site with its own URL sometime later this summer. It will be nice to have it as its own standalone web application for all of us to read. (i.e. to have one central, easy to reach location for our type of news).

--------------------------------------

On the technical side, I am still adjusting the feed filters. For anyone making a reader like this, you have to keep an eye on the feeds to adjust the filters so that unrelated news stops cropping up. Example: The online real estate mag "Curbed" has a section called Flipping Out which has nothing to do with flipping. So the filters are adjusted to stop those articles from appearing.

By the time I set up the standalone URL, the filters should be a bit more advanced.

In my free time I have been working on building a decent real estate news aggregator. It's actually not as easy as I thought it was going to be when I started.

I've built two news aggregators, each called simply enough NewsOne and NewsTwo

  • For NewsOne, I tried to combine all of the RSS feeds, news feeds, blog feeds, and even a Twitter feed I follow, into one basic compact location. I think it turned out decently enough. I also gave the aggregator a kind of news ticker feel.
  • After building NewsOne, I later decided, no, I want to see this in a much simpler way. And so, like the late night tinkerer I am, I built NewsTwo which is far simpler and only pulls four basic sets of information through Google News. As fun as NewsOne is, NewsTwo is the one I go to more often. I played around with the Google News search terms a lot and finally was able to engineer a page of four streams that is generally the most interesting to me.

For NewsTwo, I found that after making the House Flipping feed and the US Housing Market feed, it was very difficult to make a solid home mortgage feed because even slight differences in the search terms produce entirely different results. And so I had to make two separate mortgage feeds, one called Home Mortgages and the other called US Home Mortgage. - Those two different search terms pull in entirely different articles -. Also, behind the scenes in Home Mortgages, I had to filter out articles about mortgages in other countries.

Anyway, please take a look and see what you think. I'll keep tinkering with these aggregators to try to make them better.  - Best, Bobby

I have to say I love Menards. There are some great people working there. I always learn from them. Here's a photo with Dave Johnson at Menards in Minneapolis from this past weekend. Dave knows more about flooring than I'll ever know. Just love Menards.
