I would focus all your savings and energy on saving up for a house hack.  Buying a cheap, random property in the midwest just is not going to do anything for you.

Have you tried connecting with investor groups locally? Most likely, people in local groups are investing OOS and perhaps locally too. Even if they are only investing locally, investors in these groups typical help and guide others. There is so much information and noise out there, might be helpful to just find a local community to get your feet wet. 

One thing you will be asked often when you say you want to start this journey is what are your goals? What is your reason for wanting to start this journey. Your answer will certainly help you decide what kind of real estate investing makes the most sense for you too. You might not start in it right away, as you may need capital and experience, but you will at least have a better vision for your end game.
