Thanks everyone for your replies! I'm taking notes.

Um, to those who tell me to "put my life together," don't insult me. I have a Masters degree in English Composition and Rhetoric, and I am a veteran that has went overseas twice. Please.

Wow, what great advice here!

I would like to add that I have moved away from working for clients and moved toward working WITH them. That is, I have begun doing partnership-type deals with my SEO services.

(I did freelance work for a couple years, and I consistently overworked because - well - a lot of small businesses don't trust SEO people because there's a lot of snake oil in my industry. Indian SEO amateurs target new businesses and bamboozle them into spending $5,000 of funds they didn't have. Also, small business people got annoying because they created content that - say - talked about real estate but mentioned the landscape and poetic renderings of their neighborhoods. In short, they wanted me to "SEO" crap they wrote in 5 minutes and expect me to rank them #1.)

I am trying my best to create income channels, but it's SEO - ya know; it's slow moving, It's SEO, afterall. I will have money eventually. But how can I, as Gary Keller advises, work on my network? (as an SEO)

I’m a dad with a non-working wife and a son. Not much more to add.

I’m working as an SEO and another job, and I want to become an investor.

How did you get started with investing?

Awesome, thanks guys. I guess the natural next question, then, is what are likely places that I should meet the right people?

Quick question.

I just started at a real estate agency, and I found and -mostly- read a book, called the _The Millionaire Real Estate Investor_ by Gary Keller.

In it, he outlines CTN - 'N' being for network. I mean, we're here on Bigger Pockets to network, right?

I guess my question is less the 'why' about networking and more about the 'how.' I realize that as an SEO, I can help others and build out my connections that way. But how?

To put it another way: how can I - as an SEO - maximize my ability to network with those in the real estate space?

Also, keyword research is not simple. In the above statement, I claim that most SEOs are actually just keyword researchers. Well, there's good and bad ways to approach keyword research. And sadly, a lot of people don't do well at picking the right keywords.

They funnel their attention on traffic volume when difficulty to rank is the best thing to look at.

Here's a blog post I wrote on the matter. https://sunrealestateco.com/real-estate-keywords/

@Albert Brown and sorry for the typos. My app is acting glitchy
@Jim S. Hi Jim, SEO gurus are fairly inconcisistent with one another, I’ll give you that, but I’m not sure they don’t have an idea od what’s going on. They give you advice that helps them rank, and the real SEO work is learned like business, through trial and error and experimentation. As far as the algorithm updates, Google is quite clear about the big ones. Here’s the thing about SEO and it’s supposed snake oil. SEO does not equal magic, and it’s a long game. You can’t just put keywords into a website and expect return. That is beginner SEO. Unless you have an understanding of how Google Search Console and Google Analytics work, I wouldn’t call you an SEO. I’d call you a keyword researcher (and still this is done incorrectly by a lot of people). If you hire an SEO and they think/say it’s a one time deal, then run for the hills. They do snippet optimization and think it’s the whole gamut. I hate when people ask me to set keywords because I thInk they thInk thats seo In Its entIrety. It‘s not, not even close. SEO will work for all verticals, but again, it’s not magic. Here, think of it like this: set your keywords; they are the bow of your ship, and they decide what SERPS you want to compete in. Links are the wind in the sails. You’re going nowhere without them. Plain and simple

Hello everyone,

I am wondering if anyone in this community is up for a group exercise called “content connections.”

What is the goal? To build editorial links.

So, in the last couple years, especially after the Penguin and Rank Brain algorithm updates, link building has been thought of as being less helpful.

But the fact of the matter is that of 200+ ranking factors, link building still accounts for 23% of the decision of where you rank. And please, you can cross-reference my statistics.

Now, I said “editorial” links—what do I mean?

I mean links that link out to someone that you are also writing about. You have to make a decision to write about the subject of the link prior to the publication of the content.

In other words, the link is PART of the reason you are writing/making the content you’re making.

So, how it actually works is this way.

  • 1.You post in the thread something you would like linked to.
  • 2.You see what others have posted and figure out a topic that will allow you to link to 2 – 4. (Don’t forget your keywords search, though!)
  • 3.Create that content.

Some FAQs/anxieties.

Q: isn’t this a black hat activity?

A: No. If you were to make links to others simply because, and you add the links to pages in haphazard ways, then yes, it would be black hat.

But this exercise is content-oriented, and you’re making editorial decisions based on socializing. It would be no different than meeting someone in person, liking their content, and linking out to it in your next blog post.

Q: What if I do not like to write, but I want to participate?

A: One of the BEST SEO strategies I’ve ever seen is embedding a video you created into a page, and then using the transcript for Google’s crawl. Theoretically, you can do this with any other type of content, including podcast or audio files.

Do these other forms of media instead of writing
