The SECRET Every Novice MUST Apply to Their Daily Habits
Some people feel that when they graduate from college, their learning is complete. They’ve earned their degree, so they don’t need to spend any more time or energy educating themselves. However, here’s the unknown secret every novice must apply to their daily lives: Graduation is only the beginning of a lifelong education.
Ongoing Education
Since graduating from college, I have learned a lot about the process of learning. The biggest thing I have learned is that even after college, educating yourself is an ongoing process. Even after being in the industry for quite some time now, I still refresh myself about industry-related information by looking things up. There’s no shame in not knowing the answer; there’s only shame in letting your ignorance become an excuse for failure.
I strongly suggest to never be afraid to ask questions. But afterwards, you still have to do your own research. I have seen people ask questions, and they move forward with the first bit of advice offered. They don’t follow up to see if the answer is legitimate. Online, it can sometimes be difficult to know if the source is legitimate, but googling something to make sure it’s accurate is often better than just taking someone’s word for it.
Knowledge Is Power
There used to be a public service announcement, proclaiming how powerful knowledge can be. The slogan, “Knowledge Is Power,” was not only intended to encourage kids to stay in school. It was also intended to motivate the illiterate to learn to read and to motivate all people to utilize free learning tools like public libraries and vocational centers.
You might think that the very successful don’t take the time to read very often or that reading books is only for academics. However, the average American CEO reads 60 books a year. If you say you don’t have enough time to read, then you will have to simply make time for it. Even Warren Buffet spends more than half his day reading!
If you just graduated, by all means, take a break from education and apply what you’ve learned. But don’t let that break become your permanent reality. By continuing to educate yourself, you will start to separate yourself from the pack.
