Persistence, Persistence, Persistence

3 years ago I wrote about watching my daughter try to roll over when she was 4 months old. How she could not do it yet, but she kept going for it. I watched her try and fail and try and fail and on that morning not be able to do it. I love knowing that she had no idea that she would ever be able to do it, but she kept persisting. She kept trying. And she did not stop till she did it. Once she did it, she moved on to the next thing, and did that till it was completed.

“Do! Or do not. There is no try” — Yoda

What I love about that example and that quote is, there is no “trying”. She either rolled over, or she didn’t. That’s it. There is no in between. I get that we have to try things and that trying is part of life and growing, but if what we are trying does not get done, it doesn’t get done. Period. When you are starting something; getting up earlier, working out, eating clean, blogging daily, quit smoking, creating a good habit or breaking a bad habit, you just have to do it. You cannot try to wake up earlier. Look you either get up earlier or you don’t. Stop making a case for the fact that you are “trying”, just decide that you are going to do something and DO IT.

“This is what I believe and I’m willing to die for it. Period.” — Will Smith

This leads me into excuses, and making them to make yourself feel better. “Oh I did the best I could” “Oh I tried so hard for a a week” Stop it. Just stop it. It is okay to fail, it is not okay to give up. Do not let yourself give up when you are starting something new or making a change. Persistence. Persistence. Persistence. Hell ya things will get hard, hell ya you may feel like you aren’t making progress and that making the excuse that you tried is a good way to get out of it. But let me tell you, that is not how you succeed in life. You will continue to be average and a person that fits the mold of what everyone expects if you believe your excuses. Don’t let people tell you “its okay, you tried hard” Don’t let that make you feel good. Did you do it? OR did you not do it?

“Pain is temporary. It may last for a min, or an hour or even a year. But eventually it will subside and something else will take its place.”

My daughter, she is able to roll over now. She is able to walk and talk and eat by herself and do things that over the last 3 years seemed impossible at first. She persisted until she did it. I love my daughter and I love that at 4 months old and at 3 years old she can teach me a lesson. Be like a child, have unwavering faith that you can do what you decided to do.

Cheers,

GZ
