My Obsession with Productivity

I am obsessed. I am obsessed with self-development and self-improvement. I had wrote about all the things I have waiting for me to get to the other day, but I didnt talk about all the things I am currently doing. I study so much every day, I am always looking for an edge and for how to improve areas in my life. One main focus I have had for a long time is how to be more productive. Evidence of how long Ive been studying this came up when I was looking through my "saved" Facebook posts and my saved "Pocket" posts. At least 50% of both were links to peoples advice on how to be more productive.

One thing I have always known to be true but has been recently brought back to my attention is to learn more, we must teach. So I am going to write my own post about how to be insanely productive, using tricks I have read and implemented into my own life.

“Better to do something imperfectly than to do nothing flawlessly.”

One thing that comes up in alllllll of the posts is your diet and water intake. And that part is still killing me, literally and figuratively. Look, shitty food and fatty food make you lazy and tired. Its not a myth, its science. We've all been there after lunch, ready to take a nap. I still struggle with this. Bottom line is, cut the CRAP from your diet if you really want to improve EVERY aspect of your life. Water... water is the key to life. I do not know why people struggle drinking it....... pause so I can take a drink. Being dehydrated makes you tired, cranky, sore, fat, unhealthy etc... Here is my advice, drink more water. What I do is, I drink a full glass when I wake up. I drink another full glass while I start writing in the morning. Now I have had 16-20 ounces of water before 8 am... Well on my way to being hydrated for the day.

Another common thread in all my reading is your nightly and morning routines. I have actually read about that so much I use to dismiss it like "ya I know this already" but I wasn't doing it! A few tips at night, get off the damn phone. Read a book instead. Plan your day the night before, we have all heard that but it helps get you going in the morning. Set things out that you need to do, pick out your clothes, write your schedule and be prepared to get up and do it. One new thing I am doing is 10 mins before I fall asleep I write in a journal and ask questions that I want to get answers too. Our subconscious mind doesn't sleep it works while you sleep, so it is figuring things out for you. Pretty neat shit IMO. I also now have started bed time affirmations that include talking about how much sleep I am going to get and how it is the perfect amount, and how I am going to wake up in the morning READY to go.

Your last thought before you fall asleep is your first thought when you wake up.

Morning time, I can write a whole book on what I've learned about this. In fact 100s of people have. I recommend The Miracle Morning by Hal Elrod. Here are a few keys. Wake up earlier, meditate, exercise, read, say your affirmations, drink lots of water, finish the plans for the rest of the day. When you wake up, don't grab your phone and start taking in things. This time of the morning is for you to get things out. Remember the questions your asked yourself before you fell asleep, start writing whatever is in your head. You may find the answers or not, but you will clear your head and get those nagging thoughts out of there! You can take 20 mins to do this morning routing or you can take 2 hours to this. Its your morning, you control it.

Take control of your morning and take back control on the rest of your day.

I have found that since I started my morning routines I am happier, I am more alert and I am actually more productive during the day.

Using the Pomodoro technique. I am currently using the Mastery Journal from John Lee Dumas and in it, it gives you sessions. These sessions are timed, using the Pomodoro technique. What that means is, say you need to do follow up with all your prospects. So you decide you are going to work on it for 42 mins and take a break for 18 mins. Set a timer and in that 42 min window, DO NOTHING else but your follow up. Turn off your phone and distractions. Work on that thing alone. If 42 mins is too long, try 28 mins or 25 mins. But whatever you choose do that one task till the timer goes off. Then stop. If during the timed work something pops in your head that is important, write it down and get back to work.

This blew me away with what I can accomplish in such a short period of time. People wondered why I took on a new business and this was one of the reasons why. When I implemented this technique I realized how much time I had left in the day to get things done. Since, with my new business I am able to do all of it plus have plenty of time for my family. When you implement this, watch your production and efficiency increase big time.

Another tip is to track your time. Track what you were doing the last 30 mins all day long. If you were eating, peeing, working, talking on the phone, watching tv etc. write it all down so you can see where your time is spent. Obviously this does you no good if you dont adjust afterwards. But when you do this you can see when you're doing productive work, at what time of the day and you can set your schedule accordingly.

There are 100s of ideas of what works for being more productive, and they all probably help if you do them. This is just the tip of the iceberg with what I do and what ive learned. I think I will write another post about this tomorrow too with other things I do.

Cheers,

GZ
