Mentorship: How's it's helped and how I can help you take action.

Following up from my last post about getting a mentor, I’d like to share some of my progress after 4 weeks. Having a real estate mentor has been a total blessing. One of the best ways to become successful is to find someone who is successful and do exactly as they do. There’s no better way to emulate someone than by talking with them on a weekly basis and setting precise goals.

Goal setting is very important and I have set clear and precise goals for the next 5 years for my business and my personal life. Each goal has been set with the aide of my wife since she inevitably will be traveling this path with me. Without her buy in and support I don’t feel that I would be as successful as I could be.
Planning and goal setting is very important. Each and every task that my mentor provides I set to achieve and over deliver. I take great notes when we meet each week and write a summary of each meeting 1 hour after the meeting. I set the action items from each meeting on my google calendar with the highest priority. Each task isn’t simply completed, I take my time and over deliver for each and every item. I have a burning desire to be successful and show it through the quality of work, research, and time I invest into my career.

I work a 40-50 hour per week job as a Software Engineer. Doesn’t it make sense to invest the same amount of effort I’m giving to someone else into myself? I’m not saying that time defines effort. I’m talking about the difference between working and working smart. I define a plan and take precise, defined and intense action to meet that plan. This is important: Setting a plan and then TAKING ACTION.

My success prior to having a mentor was because I didn’t caught up in trying to learn all the steps of a process before taking action. I never bothered myself with knowing the logistics of step #2 when I still hadn’t completed step #1. For example, when someone tells you that you need a buyer’s list before you can wholesale you should immediately realize they may not be someone you want to take advice from in the future. The only reason that I can imagine someone would say that is to attempt to keep your competition off the market. It’s like saying, hey I’m giving away money but before I can do that I need to write a list of people who would like free money. What a crazy concept, if you wholesale correctly then you’ll have buyer’s banging down your front door when you have deals. Take any plan one step at a time, no matter what your plan may be! Don’t give yourself anxiety worrying about step #10 when you are such a newbie you can’t even do step #1.

I know I went on a bit of a rant there, but this is important! Take action today. If you are thinking, “well I can’t take action until I read another book” then here’s what you’re really saying: I would rather lose money (yes you’re losing potential money by not taking action) than take action and walk the path of success.

Having a mentor has really allowed me to re-set the goals for my business, write a clear business plan, and take daily steps towards meeting my goals. I’m no longer afraid to lose leads because they don’t meet my clear, specified criteria. More importantly, I love real estate even more than I did (if that is possible). I wake up every day excited about the actions that I’m taking to set my future.
