Did I Really Say $500,000.00 in 2010?

I've talked about this before in my inner circles and have instructed a few newbs on this method but haven't ever really mentioned because the topic hasn't come up until recently.

Most recently, Shae Bynes posted a blog here on the BiggerPockets Blog titled: 9 Great Ways to Get Over Being Overwhelmed and in the comments, I gave a vague mention of the mind game I constantly play with myself.

I decided it would make for a good topic on my site Subject.com and it gained some traction. I wasn't expecting so many reactions but I'm glad it did because it gave me an opportunity to do a follow up blog with more in depth discussion.

You can get an idea of it from the comment on Shae's post, get more info by going to my blog but I'll also give you some insight to it here incase you don't want to travel outside of BP which is understandable, we all love this place :)

What I do is pick a number that I want to beat for the year. You can do this is shorter time frames or specified time frames but it's always easiest to do in the beginning of the year.

I don't use that number as my 'Goal' number, I use it as the number that I'm trying to beat, typically this will be the prior years profits rounded up, for instance, if you made $112,000.00 this year, then next year you need to round up to $200,000.00 and use that as your target number.

You break this down by the month, week and then the day. You use this as your motivation to keep your arse busy on profit producing activities. You keep an eye on your weekly goal because your actual goal in reality is to increase your weekly deal completion(which is the secret). Each time you profit on a deal and/or combination of deals in a single week, you combine those dollar amounts and double it and add it to the original target number.

You then do the process all over again now with the higher numbers. The idea is instead of trying to knock it out of the park with one or two deals with higher profit margins, is to increase your deal completions for the week total regardless of the dollar amount. This will in turn create a ridiculous snow ball effect and you quickly CRUSH your original target amount.

Swing by to see what others are targeting for their numbers and what they break down to and do the exercise yourself. I can assure you that if you FOCUS on this, you will make more than you imagined.

  1. Great idea! I love it when I have set a challenge for myself. I will actually reward myself for "beating" the challenge. All-in-all, it really does work!

  2. It is a matter of setting goals, having a plan and systmes in place to achieve them and then follow through!! Good idea for all to read Nick.
