Introduction to me! Starting a blog on MF syndication!

Starting with my story in Real Estate and why I am here. While I feel everyone has a very unique story in Real Estate as we all are here for different reasons and the same reasons in many ways. In 2018 I was working as a retail manager at Publix Supermarkets. Now if you are from the Southeast many of you know and love Publix, if you are from elsewhere you may have simply heard of the grocery store. But anyways, it truly is a great company and I was having great success as one of they youngest managers at the company. There was only one problem, I had no passion for it. I had never considered myself to be an entrepreneur, but I had a hard time believing that I wanted to work 50 hours a week, including weekends, and late nights for a paycheck (trading time for money). At this rate I would work until I was 60 (my “ambitious goal”) and then retire and travel. But like many of us here I knew that wasn’t going to work.

The mindset change came from the little purple book we know so well, Rich Dad, Poor Dad. Lucky enough for me I was also receiving my MBA with a specialization in Commercial Real Estate. So I thought, “this is it, Real Estate.” And like most people I started with a house hack, a simple duplex, where one side almost covered my mortgage, which I considered a good start and a good learning experience. I definitely recommend this as a first step. Well not long after that I read a book called 4-hour work week, also popular in this new crowd I wanted to be a part of. Well that was another mindset change in and of itself. This time it prompted me to travel, because after one property I had officially made it and didn’t have to worry about anything else anymore. So I up and quit my secure W2 job to travel the world for a year.

My thought was that I had one year to travel (on a budget), and during that year I needed to get my passive income to an amount that could cover my living expenses going forward. My girlfriend and I traveled around Europe for a little over 3 months before coming back to the U.S. (life happens.) And when I got back the count down was on. Over the next year or so I partnered on a few SFR (single family rentals) to get to a reasonable amount where I felt comfortable not having to go back to my W2. Over time I had another mindset change, this time one of scale. Listening to podcast like Michael Blank and Joe Fairless, I decided to move on to Multifamily syndication. While I believe that all Real Estate investing is an amazing asset and investment, my particular favorite is apartments. After hearing about apartments I knew this is how I could not only scale my portfolio, but be able to help others do the same through syndication.

Since then I started Built Capital LLC, a private equity firm that specializes in Value-Add apartment communities here in the Southeast. My goal through my company and my blog is to not just spread awareness of the benefits of investing in Real Estate and financial freedom, but that of passion and happiness. Wow, that sounds cheesy. But really, I find nothing wrong with working a W2 job, or working until your 65, or working weekends, I simply think you should enjoy it. There should be passion and happiness in your everyday life, which includes your job. So my goal and advice isn’t for everyone to quit and become real estate investors. Become real estate investors actively if you really enjoy it, but otherwise invest passively/ partner on deals so that you can quit the job that is unfulfilling and go work where you enjoy it. If you love golf you could work at a golf course or coach a baseball team, not because you’ll make a lot of money, but because your life will be better. That is the power of real estate, not everyone has to actively flip properties, syndicate deals, or wholesale to be financial free, but you do have to start. Hopefully I can help you do that. Each week I will be posting a blog with information covering an important topic in real estate, with the goal that you come away with something whether it be knowledge or a mindset shift that moves you forward in your investing career. I would love to connect with you on here as well as on my website where you can find some value and all my other blog post.

Post a comment or question here about how you got started in RE! What makes you happy?

Thank you for reading and connecting!
