Why I Moved to Roanoke
Why did I decide to move to Roanoke and why do I think it’s going to be key to building my real estate empire?
There are several factors someone should look at when deciding where they want to live.
I had certain criteria and here are the reasons why I chose Roanoke as my place to set up shop.
Close to My Hometown
For me, I wanted to stay close to home, at least for now. My mom is a cancer survivor and my grandmother just passed away last year. My brother and sister always seem to be getting into some kind of drama. I wanted to make myself available in case of emergency.
Roanoke is just an hour away from my home and I can be there quickly if I need to be. When other family members come in from out of state and my presence is required, it’s not as much of a hassle to show up and make an appearance.
I don’t know if I’ll stay in Roanoke forever, but it’s a great place to “start over”. I can leapfrog to several larger cities from here.
Better Internet
As someone who enjoys writing, I needed better internet. I do some freelancing and I maintain several blogs on various websites.
I lived in the county of my hometown and the best internet we could get was DSL, which even on its best day was mediocre. I wanted something better, and a bigger city gives me access to the best internet in the area.
Job Opportunities
As someone who is always looking for a job that’s better, pays more, and will give me what I want out of life, I spend a lot of time on Indeed.
My hometown is a small college town. Most of the residents prefer it to stay that way. Job growth is very low and I spent most of my adult life working in food service and hospitality because those were the only places that were consistently hiring. I’m done with all of that and looking to move on. Upward and onward!
Real Estate is Cheap
As soon as I moved into the area, I started looking at house listings. It was surprising to see homes selling for much cheaper than they do back home.
I kept my eyes peeled. I live in a decent part of town, but it’s definitely not the nicest. I’ve seen homes go up for sale in the last few months and I kept driving by them. Roughly half a dozen in my neighborhood. Every single one had an “under contract” sign on it within six weeks.
This tells me that this city is ripe for someone like to me to come in and build something. This tells me that there are buyers and motivated sellers. With any luck, I can become both.
Let’s see what happens.
