The Decision - House Hacking

I've been a personal finance blogger for a year and a half. I'm not super wealthy. Quite the opposite.

My blog is all about being frugal and a minimalist and using these ideas to escape the working poor class. After getting chatty with a blogger called guy on fire , I decided that house hacking needed to be in my future.

A Bit About Me

I'm from a small town. There were few employment opportunities. The internet is awful. And I felt like I was doomed to work a $10 an hour job forever.

I wanted to do something different. I wanted to grow financially and as a human being.

So the first thing I did was quit my job and move. Hah!

I'm a part-time freelance writer and I also work as a janitor part-time. The janitor gig helps with the tax burden and it's only a few blocks from my apartment, which is nice.

I'm in credit card and student loan debt, so I'm trying to pay that down and build some capital to get my first property.

The Plan

The goal is to buy a house with multiple bedrooms and then get roommates to cover the mortgage and utilities, or at least most of it.

I will build an emergency fund to cover my own butt as well as any large repair needs that come with being a homeowner. Once I get this straightened out, I'm going to start investing in multi-family units.

I know I'm a noob and I'm making this sound simpler than it's really going to be. However, I'm fully aware of how much hard work is going to go into this project. But my friend, guy on fire, said one of the best ways to learn is the school of hard knocks.

The real estate class and license are also in my future. I don't plan on becoming a real estate agent, but I want some knowledge of property management so I have at least some clue as to what to do and when.

Conclusion

As I sit in  my home office , I know how silly all of this must sound to an experienced property manager or investor. But it's a start. It's an idea. And it's something that will come together with time.

My biggest strength is my patience and I'm going to need every ounce of it.

I welcome any and all advice or tips from the Bigger Pockets community. It's going to take months, possibly years, before I enter into the buying process. Thanks in advance for having me on the site and any help you may be able to give.
