Insuring non occupied homes

Can anybody here tell me how they are able to get home insurance on a home you are rehabbing that could take 6 months to complete and is unoccupied for that time.

Hi Richard,

There are several companies out there who will write a vacant dwelling policy for the type of property you're talking about.  The coverage is not as good as a standard homeowner's policy and the cost tends to be more due to the higher risk.  A few of the companies I use who will write this type of policy are American Modern, Foremost, and Vacant Express.  If someone is insuring a property like this with a standard homeowner's policy or landlord dwelling policy, it is improperly insured and they would risk not being covered at all in the event of a claim.
