Finding Property....Wholesaler or Agent?

For purchasing owner-occupied or investment property, is it better to initially work with a wholesaler or a real estate agent?

A real estate agent can find foreclosures, short sales, and opportunities with wholesalers. But I would think the better situation will be with working directly with a wholesaler and pull in an agent, if needed, to complete the paperwork.

As you can tell, I am a newbie, so curious what is the best way to start looking for property to purchase.
