Wholesaling from a different state?

Hi everybody, I have two questions! One, is it possible to do wholesaling completely (100%) from a different state (virtually)? Also, is wholesaling illegal? I've heard that once you purchase the contract and then market it, the property is not completely yours, and thus, is practicing real estate without a license.
