Direct Mail Letters

Has anyone done actual testing on their letters to find out what works, what doesn't? In terms of all of it, the type of letter, the envelope, etc. I know this is a valuable commodity if you have tested hundreds or thousands of letters.

I'll trade you (I"m a remodeling and green expert) or pay you.

I know, this proposal is a bit odd. :)

I have sent over a quarter million letters to 65 + cities in the last 8 months, and tracking those results has been part of the service. While I agree that people are people, I found out pretty quickly that one size does not fit all.

I usually will enter a new market with the best of what I have, but inevitably there are tweaks to be made to observe local customs and manerisms. For instance in Austin the city's unofficial motto is "keep Austin weird". Directness with humor works well. Try the same humor in New England, and they'll call the cops. Be too direct in Denver without observing manners and you're likely to get a whole box of junk mail shipped to your return address.

That said, @Gary Parker is right on the money as usual andI agree with him 100%.

There are volumes of information here, specific and detailed; just don't allow yourself to slip into analysis paralysis trying to get it just right. Truth is you wont know until you've tried. But I think Logan Boyter is in your area. You may want to look up his posted success stories.
