What is the usual progression of a wholesaler

I have been looking to starting a side hustle in wholesaling. I am curious about the progression of a wholesale from start to finish. And also what happens if the buyer backs out after the seller is locked in? Would you find a new seller? Do you have to have money into the deal usually?
