Jackson County (Kansas City) 2023 Property Tax Increases Deemed Illegal
I'm surprised I haven't seen any talk of this in the forums (or maybe I just missed it). But the insane tax increases in Jackson County, Missouri (Kansas City) were deemed illegal:
"Missouri’s State Tax Commission ordered Jackson County to roll back its 2023 property tax assessments, which raised homeowners property assessments by an average of 30% and more than 100% in some cases. Attorney General Andrew Bailey and county legislators called the order a win for homeowners. But city governments, schools, public libraries and first responders could face major budget shortfalls.
"The order requires the county to roll back 2023 assessments to either their current level or a 15% increase from the last assessment, whichever is lower. For most taxpayers, that means assessments will be reduced to 2021 or 2022 levels, plus 15%."
Ours went up an average of 67%, although we appealed everything and got it knocked down to an average increase of only 39%. I did the math and they'd owe us $130,000 if this stands.
I figure they will fight this order with everything they have. And they are clearly corrupt so it could get ugly. And of course, that money is already spent so who knows how they'd round up the cash to return to those of us they gouged last year anyways. Should be interesting to watch...

Quote from @Caleb Brown:
Interesting. Would they write checks to every owner if they lose? Weird time
I have no idea how they would do it especially given that money has already been spent or at least allocated. For now, they're going to fight it and they're pretty darn crooked so it could get pretty ugly. After all, County Assessor Gail McCann Beatty just straight up perjured herself during this whole mess. https://www.kctv5.com/2024/07/09/homeowners-call-jackson-cou...
So for now we'll just have to wait and see.
