What is a Reasonable Retainer Amount RAL / ALF

Hello,

What is a reasonable retainer amount without going overboard?     I am aware that attorney fees and costs can add up during a transaction (purchase of 2 RAL's in NH), but, should it start at over $20k?     

Your input is greatly appreciated, as I want to understand the differences between retaining a law firm with $20k retainer or $2,500.00 retainer.
