Triplex Multi-Family Primary Residence Requirement

Greetings BP Community,

I am planning to purchase a Triplex with a VA loan that requires I live in the property for one year. If I purchase a home with large egress windows in the basement with two exits. Can I live in the basement while I lease the 3 units and still fulfill my primary residence requirement? Advice in this matter will be greatly appreciated!
