Townhouse hacking- house hacking

Posted

Thoughts on house hacking with a townhouse? I saw a decent looking one that had an HOA cost. What is an HOA? I heard they were a pain in the *** to deal with

Personally I chose to avoid townhomes due to the HOA. I actually love the idea of a townhome. Affordable, still feels like a home inside. The 3 story ones are so impressively large, with amazing layouts, decks, garages, etc. Most townhomes in my area (Raleigh, NC) require 6mo min leases and proof of that sent to HOA. Most do not allow STR or Monthlies. If you find a community with a reasonably low HOA, with existing renters in it, and have talked with the board to ensure there is no issues, AND the layout makes sense.... then I would definitely consider it. Ultimately, I chose a detached SFH fixer-upper to house hack because it was the same price as a nice townhome and I could force equity and avoid HOA altogether. But to each their own. PM me if you want to talk more about this, I love talking real estate and am always willing to help
