Is it normal to pay part of the mortgage?

Hey everyone, it seems like it’s difficult to get the full mortgage covered + cashflow while living in the other half of a multi family. With the interest rates right now it’s even difficult to just get the full mortgage covered.

Have any of you ever paid a portion your mortgage while living in your house hack? I would only do this if the numbers showed that I would cashflow after moving out. Is this a viable strategy?

It is ABSOLUTELY normal to pay part of the mortgage. Yes, you want it to cash flow when you move out but paying part of the mortgage is not the end of the world. The internet made it seem like it’s so easy to live for free if you house hack but it’s not. My wife and I were paying $800 a month in our first house hack. This was a big difference from our 2k rent and a much nicer place. People that are living for free are usually sacrificing more. I could have covered that 800 renting out the guest room but my wife and I didn’t want that. If you’re really willing to commit then ya buy a duplex and feel it with as many people as possible. But that may not be the move you want.
