House hacking without renting your current home.

Good day to everyone.  I'm new here. Hoping someone can answer this for me. I want to purchase my 1st rental. Interested on a duplex. My question is. I don't have a mortage on my current home. Can I house hack a duplex and not rent my current home? I still have adult kids in collage living at home and my mom. I would like to use one of the 2 units to move in and rent the second one without renting my current home. Hope this makes sense.

@Bidkar Salazar house hacking applies to your primary residence. If you wanted to use an FHA on the duplex you would need to occupy it for a year. But there's no rule saying you have to rent out house #1. If your mom/kids are occupying that first house it won't matter. Whoever is on the mortgage is the one who needs to live in that property if using an FHA. Sounds like you don't have anything standing in your way.
