How to Make an ADU Compliant

Jeff Mitchell
Posted

Hello,

I am looking for some help in making an ADU compliant with all city ordinances for renting. There is a single-family home with what used to be a detached garage in the backyard. The garage was turned into an ADU about 10 years ago. Although the building was built to meet all building codes, there were no permits obtained for the work. I have done some research on the city's website and found the zoning for the property to be labeled as 'RA-2B One Family Residential'. There is a category for 'accessory building and uses' which has an ordinance of 'principle permitted use'. I am wondering if there is anyone that could help me understand what steps need to be taken to make this building compliant to have a tenant living in the building.
