What counts as occupancy for HUD?

Michael Nguyen
Posted

I want to start my real estate journey with house hacking using an FHA loan, but I live with and take care of my sick parents who aren't in a stage of life to move.

My question is, can anyone give me a more clear definition on the minimum requirements of occupancy where I would qualify for an FHA loan and how the government checks? For example, do I need to sleep in the house or can I live/work out of it for the majority of the day and then sleep at my parent's place?

FHA Occupancy requirements:

a primary residence is one in which the owner occupies the property for the “majority” of the year

Thanks for taking time to read and answer this!
