Inherited past owner’s water bill

Hi,

I closed on my first property a year ago, but when I received my first water bill it was outrageously high. During closing, no one had requested a final meter reading. Admittedly I didn’t realize this was something that had to be requested either but it seems like my lawyer or title company would have caught this. Now that I’ve closed my lawyer is reluctant to return my calls and emails, but does acknowledge the issue. I assume they aren’t motivated because I’m no longer paying them. It’s been over a year since addressing this. Also not sure if it was their mistake and that’s why they’re avoiding me. What do you think the best course of action is?
