Looking to make most of my first buy.

Hi BigPocketers, this is my first time posting on the forum. I am almost ready to get my first house in a few months. I am thinking of getting a distressed/rehab home using a conventional loan and then getting it up to the mark. I am thinking of getting a good deal so that I can have some equity in the house after revamping it. Any guidance would be really appreciated. I want my first house to be a learning experience for more house flips to come. also please suggest the best places to look for houses in northwest suburbs. To my knowledge, I was thinking of Elgin, Streamwood, and West Chicago. please feel free to give your perspective on this. I aspire to become a good flipper and learn a lot on the way. Thank you.
